Prayer Walks, Our Story…

From 2022 to 2024 people from across the churches and traditions of Tower Hamlets gathered on Thursday mornings to walk and pray, come rain or shine.

We covered the borough and prayer walked every parish — a simple way of lifting up our many neighbourhoods and needs to Jesus. It was a deeply uniting act, walking with each other and with God.

So much was born out of this that we can’t really explain but two obvious things were the planting of a new congregation on a new housing project, London City Island, as well as the House of Prayer for East London, a new monastic expression in Tower Hamlets deanery.

Pray walking has continued as we helped pilot an initiative called ‘Thy Kingdom Come Here’ May-June 2024 which was a great challenge and deep act of prayer - 193 people prayer walked over 70% of our streets, that’s just under 1000km! You can read more about it here . We took part again this year in 2025 and prayer walking continues in various parishes and areas each month going into 2026.

Get out with a friend or on your own

Through the House of Prayer and local churches various people go on regular prayer walks with a friend or on their own.

We suggest reading Psalm 24 to begin, walking slowly and looking around, ask God, ‘What do you want me to pray for?’ And ask yourself, ‘What am I noticing?’. Pray for light in the darkness, healing, freedom, faith. End your time with the Tower Hamlets prayer (below).

You may also want to download the ‘Holy Ground’ app onto your phone so you can track and share your walk and see it amongst all the others going on :0)

A Prayer For Tower Hamlets

We finish each prayer walk praying together our Tower Hamlets Prayer:

Father Almighty, may your name be praised in Tower Hamlets.
Have mercy on our many neighbourhoods and needs;
shine your great light on our darkness and disappointments.

Jesus our Saviour, we give you thanks for the rich history of the East End;
Heal the hurt of bombs and scars, of death and injustice.
Help your good-news-church to bring our borough hope.

Spirit of peace, let there be peace;
from Victoria Park to Island Gardens;
from Petticoat Lane to the River Lea.

For you, O God, are stronger than the Tower
and mightier than the Thames,
You are the Lord of heaven and earth.

Amen
