Tower Hamlets Mission
-incorporating Charis

Tower Hamlets Mission was founded in 1870 by Frederick Charrington on the Mile End Road. Frederick was born in Bow Road on the 4th February 1850 and was the heir to the Charrington Brewery, now where Halfords and Curry’s now stand. At the age of 19, having read the gospel he had a conversion experience and became a Christian. A year later, after seeing a woman with her children outside a public house being pushed to the ground by her intoxicated husband, Frederick, whom himself being pushed to the ground after trying to help, saw the Charrington family name on the public house, wanted nothing to do with the family business. He then devoted his life to helping the poor in the East End.

Our aim is to enable them to break the cycle of chronic addiction definitively and to rebuild purposeful, stable lives through the provision of high quality, comprehensive, and long term residential therapy, rehabilitation and resettlement.”
